Redlands Bowl 2001 Season
August 10th
Programs start at 8:15 p.m.

United States Air Force Band of The Golden West. This forty-five member musical squadron continues to maintain its rich tradition of musical excellence and outstanding Air Force professionalism.

The musical squadron of the United States Air Force arrives at Redlands Bowl on Friday, August 10, at 8:15 p.m. when the Band of the Golden West presents its concert for the Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival. The band, returning for one of many repeat performances, has included the Redlands Bowl on its tour of nearly 500 annual concerts throughout the western United States.

With the tightest precision and highest ranking professionalism, the Band of the Golden West will present a program of military marches, jazz and popular arrangements, concert band/wind ensemble literature,
orchestral transcriptions, Broadway excerpts, and of course, patriotic songs.

The Band of the Golden West maintains eight musical ensembles, and the Concert Band, the largest unit with 40 members, will perform for the Redlands Bowl. This band has made many recordings and it performs for music conventions and plays in addition to its many other assignments. As the only remaining active duty Air Force band west of the Rocky Mountains, the Band of the Golden West serves Washington, Oregon, and California. In its current configuration, it is only seven years old,
having been formed in 1994 through a combination of the 1941 Fifteenth Air Force Band of the Golden West and the 1959 America's Band in Blue.

Captain Douglas C. Monroe, who studied at Manhattan School of Music in New York City, Michigan State University, the University of Arizona, Ohio State University, and the Aspen Music Festival, will conduct the Band of the Golden West, commanding the group he has led since November of 1998. A veteran of directing bands all over the world, Monroe has commanded performances for American servicemen at forward-deployed locations in
Bosnia and Turkey and he has led performances for former Presidents Clinton and Bush, German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, and United States Ambassadors throughout Europe. As a musician, he has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and historic Royal Albert Hall in London.

On Saturday, August 11, at 10:00 a.m., the Band of the Golden West will present the Children's Festival Workshop at the Redlands Community Center, 111 W. Lugonia Avenue, Redlands.

For this concert, the intermission speaker will be Marsha Gebara, Vice President and Program Director, Redlands Community Music Association, Inc.

Continuing the tradition begun in 1924, this and all Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival events are open to the public at no charge, and a free-will offering will be collected at intermission.
