Redlands Bowl 2001 Season
August 7th
Programs start at 8:15 p.m.
Chavatal/Kritzer Duo. Classical guitarist/coloratura soprano. Folk and American Songs in an experience of playfulness and the magic of genuine musical ensemble. Co-sponsored by Walter's Merceded-Benz.
Romanticism, vibrant and sensual, will waft over the Redlands Bowl on Tuesday, August 7, at 8:15 p.m., as The Chvatal Kritzer Duo presents its concert for the Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival. Pairing the coloratura soprano voice with the classical guitar sounds, The Chvatal Kritzer Duo will perform opera arias, folk, and American songs, including "Tis a Gift to be Simple", "O Mio Babbino Caro", "Summertime", "Think of Me" from The Phantom of the Opera, and "Habanera" from Carmen. Kritzer will also perform several works for solo guitar, including "Sevilla" by Isaac Albeniz and Theme and Variations from Mozart's "The Magic Flute".
According to Kritzer, the duo offers a "fresh alternative to the stiffness of vocal recitals: an inviting and intimate six-string guitar, blended perfectly underneath the warmth and sensuality of a pure, captivating voice."
While searching in 1994 for a "portable" accompanist for a recital in a tiny piano-less church in Oysterville, Washington, Janet Chvatal, a young coloratura opera singer, connected with classical guitarist Scott Kritzer in a program that launched a tour of engagements that has taken them across the United States, and throughout Canada and Europe. Since their debut at Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., in 1996, they have dazzled the critics who acclaim their work. As David Stabler of The Oregonian exclaimed, "Enchantment is what Chvatal and Kritzer are about . . . everything this Duo does speaks of romance." At "Festhalle" in Frankfurt, Germany, they performed their intimate concert to an audience of
8,000, warming their listeners to the power of the subtle musical interchange between two kindred souls.
Chvatal has starred as "Christine" in Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera in Vienna, Austria, and has made guest appearances in opera and in concert in England, France, Germany, Austria, Sweden and both
the east and west coasts of the United States.
Renowned as a soloist for his adventuresome programs and for his colorful and elegant interpretations of the avant garde, Kritzer has performed in concert halls spanning the globe, including New York's Carnegie Recital Hall. His recent performance for the California Center
for the Arts in Escondido was sold-out eight months in advance. The Redlands Bowl concert is co-sponsored by Walter's Mercedes-Benz in Riverside. Intermission speaker will be Dave Hinman, Director of Development for KVCR-TV, Channel 24. Intermission ushers will be members of the Redlands Chamber of Commerce, Ambassador's Club, and of the American Association of University of Women. At 7:20 p.m., Curtiss Allen Sr. will lead the audience in a Community Sing.
The Children's Festival Workshop will be presented at 3:00 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 2 W. Olive Avenue in Redlands. The Chvatal Kritzer Duo will conduct the workshop of folk and American songs. Continuing the tradition begun in 1924, this and all Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival events are open to the public at no charge, and a free-will offering will be collected at intermission.
