Redlands Bowl 2001 Season
July 10th
Programs start at 8:15 p.m.

Harry James Orchestra. Veteran swing trumpeter, Art Depew, leads this timeless Big Band orchestra in a concert of Swing and Big Band favorites. By special arrangement with Producers, Incorporated. Co-sponsored by Empire Marine Boat Sales & Service. The Big Band Sounds of The Harry James Orchestra Come to the Redlands Bowl

Living the legacy, trumpeter Art Depew brings The Harry James Orchestra to the Redlands Bowl for the July 10 concert of the Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival. Presented by special arrangement with Producers, Incorporated, this ensemble will swing and sway with the timeless sounds of the Big Band era.
The sixteen member orchestra will hop, bop, and bebop to the tunes of Tuxedo Junction, Back Beat Boogie, You Made Me Love You, 2 O'clock Jump, and more. In a swing style that trumpeter Harry James made famous, his namesake Orchestra will take the Redlands Bowl audience down a musical memory lane of the melodies that perked up the spirits of the Americans during the years of World War II.

Trumpeter Art Depew planted his musical roots during the war years, playing trumpet in the 304th ASF band at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. before studying symphonic trumpet for three and a half years at Juilliard School of Music. He played lead trumpet for Harry James for four years before heading to California where he eventually joined the Lawrence Welk Show as first trumpet for 8 years. After a continuous stream of engagements, Depew accepted the call to front the Harry James Orchestra, a job he had dreamed of since childhood. Vocalist Cassie Miller joins the orchestra to sing Beginning to See the Light, It's Been a Long Long Time, and I've Heard That Song Before. Miller has toured with Andy Williams, Perry Como, Walt Disney's Snow White, and her own show, "Cassie in Concert".

The Harry James Orchestra concert begins at 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10, following the Community Sing at 7:20 lead by Curtiss Allen Sr. At 3:00 p.m., the Children's Festival Workshop will present pianist Lara Urrutia, a junior winner of the Young Artists Auditions in the year 2000. The workshop, free to the public, will be held at the First Congregational Church, 2 W. Olive Avenue in Redlands. This concert is co-sponsored by Empire Marine Boat Sales and Service. The intermission speaker will be Jim Jeffries, CEO of Empire Marine Boat Sales and Service, and the intermission ushers will be members of Trinity Episcopal Church and representatives from Discovery Shops.

Continuing the tradition begun in 1924, this and all Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival events are open to the public at no charge, and a free-will offering will be collected at intermission.
