Redlands Bowl 2001 Season
June 29th
Programs start at 8:15 p.m.

Summer Festival Symphony Orchestra. "2001 Pops Odyssey:" Frank Fetta, conductor. Guest soloist Suzanna Guzman, mezzo-soprano. 2001 Pops Odyssey opens Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival

The Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival season opens on Friday, June 29, at 8:15 p.m. with a "2001 Pops Odyssey". Tipping his hat to the infamous theme from "2001 Space Odyssey", Maestro Frank Fetta will conduct the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra through a galaxy of works which ring familiar and welcome to the casual listener's ear.

Mezzo-Soprano Suzanna Guzman will take the stage to accompany Fetta on this musical journey to the stars. An associate artist of the Los Angeles Music Center Opera, Guzman has performed extensively throughout the world at such renowned venues as the New York City Metropolitan Opera, Kennedy Center's Washington Opera, Le Grand Theatre de Geneve, and the Dresden Musikfestspiele. Southern California opera-lovers will recognize her voice from the KKGO 105.1 FM "L.A. Opera Notes" radio show which she co-hosts every Sunday.
"Ms. Guzman and I have worked together since 1979," said Fetta. "We've done many recitals together, I've coached her, and, of course, she has appeared several times on the Redlands Bowl stage as soloist and as Carmen in Bizet's opera which we produced here in 1994."

For this event, the highly acclaimed and charismatic Guzman will sing several Rogers and Hammerstein pieces and pieces from Carmen. Fetta, who has been with the Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival for more than twenty years, has programmed several works from "2001 Space Odyssey", whose famous theme by Richard Strauss ranks among the most familiar classical music/movie themes, and another Strauss--Johann Strauss--piece, The Blue Danube concert waltz. Other scheduled works include American Salute by Morton Gould,1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky, and Festival Fanfare by Wayne R. Bohrnstedt, who composed this work for the Redlands Bowl several years ago.

Fetta, serving again as artistic advisor for the Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival, recently finished conducting the finals of the Loren Zachary International Vocal Competition. He is the music director/conductor for the Culver City-Marina-Westchester Symphony and he holds the same position with the Torrance Symphony and the newly formed Marina Del Rey Summer Symphony. Also, he is the principle conductor for the Nevada Opera Theatre, where he conducted Puccini's Madama Butterfly this past May.

The intermission speaker for this concert will be David B. Raff, President, Redlands Community Music Association, Ic., and the ushers will be members of the Rotary Club of Redlands.

Continuing the tradition begun in 1924, this and all concerts are open to the public at no charge, and a free-will offering will be collected at intermission. For more information about this concert, call the Redlands Bowl office at 909/793-7316 or visit the web site at www.redlandsweb.com.
