Navy Band Southwest Returns to the Redlands Bowl for Tuesday, August 13

On tour from its base in San Diego, the Navy Band Southwest will
march into Redlands to appear at the Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival on Tuesday, August 13, at 8:15 p.m.
Organized in 1923, the Navy Band Southwest has served the
southwestern United States for more than seventy-five years, and today it performs as the musical ambassador of Commander, Navy Region Southwest. It is one of fourteen official Navy Bands located throughout the continental United States, Hawaii, Italy, and Japan.
For the Redlands Bowl, the band will present the Pops, the
largest ensemble of Navy Band Southwest. Made up of the band's entire complement of 45 talented musicians, it performs all styles of music, from Sousa marches and traditional seafaring classics to popular hits by such artists as Garth Brooks or Celine Dion.
The Pops and other Navy Band Southwest groups perform in over 600 concerts a year, and travel to San Francisco, Denver, Phoenix, Reno, Albuquerque, Los Angeles, and Salt Lake City. Each year, they join up with the San Diego Symphony Summer Pops to entertain San Diego residents. According to Director Lieutenant Stephen J. Trzcinski, the Band's concert will feature an amazing variety of music. From traditional marches (including "Commando March" by Samuel Barber), to a Glenn Miller medley,
to music from the soundtrack of "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves" by Michael Kamen, to the concert band classic, "First Suite in Eb for Military Band" by Gustav Holst. "Caribbean Nights", a Latin jazz piece, will feature principal flute Musician 2nd Class Charity Mahannah on flute and piccolo. Like most of the performers, Trzcinski makes music his life. He took over the assignment of Director in September of 2001 after having served in Navy bands since 1986. He guides the day to day operation of the group, relying on his background of a Master of Music degree in trombone
performance from Southern Methodist University and freelance performing with the Dallas and Forth Worth Opera Orchestras and the East Texas Symphony.
At 3:00 on Tuesday afternoon, the band will present "Come Salute
America!", a free workshop for children ages 5 through 12, as part of the Children's Summer Festival Workshop series. The workshop, partially underwritten by Redlands Knights of the Round Table and the Redlands Community Hospital, will be presented at the First Congregational Church, 2 W. Olive Avenue in Redlands.
This concert, co-sponsored by Chicago Title, will begin at 8:15,
preceded at 7:20 by the Community Sing led by Curtiss Allen, Sr. The intermission ushers will be representatives of the Kiwanis Evening and Kiwanis Morning groups. The intermission speaker will be David Raff, President of the Redlands Community Music Association. Continuing the tradition begun in 1924, this and all concerts are free of charge, and a free-will offering will be collected at intermission.
