Beauty and the Beast Comes to the Bowl August 8

Redlands, CA – The Redlands Community Music Association is proud to present State Street Ballet of Santa Barbara performing the classic fairy tale “Beauty and the Beast”, Friday, August 8, 2003 at the Redlands Bowl. Robert Sund, Emmy award-winning choreographer, adapted the classic story of Beauty and the Beast, based on the Jean Cocteau film, for State Street Ballet’s 1998-1999 season. The beautiful score by Tchaikovsky, combined with stunning costumes completed the magical transformation, and State Street Ballet’s “Beauty and the Beast” played to sold out houses. Beauty and the Beast was performed on the company’s international debut in Taiwan, April 2000, and in a six city return engagement in 2001.State Street Ballet was founded in 1994. It now performs in over 50 productions each season as well as numerous outreach programs that expose an average of 10,000 young people annually to the art of classical ballet. The company, led by Rodney Gustafson, a former dancer with the American Ballet Theatre has danced with many of the greats including Mikhail Baryshnikov as well as many famous choreographers such as Alvin Ailey, George Balanchine, Rudolf Nureyev, Jerome Robbins and Anthony Tudor. He has appeared in the films “Turning Point,” “Baryshnikov’s Nutcracker,” and several Live from Lincoln productions.Beauty and the Beast marks State Street Ballet’s fourth appearance in the Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival.
The ballet will begin at 8:15 p.m. Representatives from the Kimberly Crest Board and Docents Auxiliary and the Family Services Association will serve as ushers for the evening, and Bob Hawkins, Executive Director of Kimberly Crest House and Gardens will be the intermission speaker. On Saturday, August 9, State Street Ballet will present the Children’s Summer Festival Workshop at the Community Center which is located at 111 west Lugonia Avenue in Redlands, starting at 10:00 a.m. They will offer a program titled “The Magic of Beauty and the Beast in Dance”. The workshop is open to all children from five to twelve years old. There is no admission charge.
All events of the Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival are presented without an admission charge, with a free-will offering collected at intermission.
