9/3/2008 - Glass Armonica Performance by Willian Zeitler William Zeitler will give a performance on the glass armonica on Wednesday, September 10 at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary of Redlands First United Methodist Church, 1 E. Olive Avenue, Redlands. In addition to his performance, William’s presentation will include sharing the history of the instrument. His will play pieces by Mozart and Beethoven, Tchaikowski's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy", Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever", a Beatles' favorite and a composition of his own. William has spent over a decade researching the history of the glass armonica--including, tracking down and translating articles written in the 1700's of which only single copies survive to the present day. William tells us “The glass armonica was invented by Benjamin Franklin. It works on the “wet finger around the wine glass rim” idea. Franklin was very interested in music—he was a capable amateur performer on several instruments and even composed a string quartet. I am honored to share my discoveries in ‘question and answer’ opportunities during the performance—the story behind the instrument is easily as extraordinary as the instrument itself” William Zeitler, a musician since the age of five, has a degree from Cal-Arts, and has been a professional musician for many years. He supports himself as a composer and producer of his own original music CDs, and also as an international performer on the glass armonica. Upcoming film scores on which William can be heard playing glass armonica include Step Brothers starring Will Ferrell and the HBO special Taking Chance. He has also appeared as an expert on the glass armonica on the History Channel (‘Franklin Tech’ on Modern Marvels). His book on the history of the glass armonica, the culmination of 13 years of research, will be published early 2009. More information is available at http://www.williamzeitler.com The performance is free, however, donations to Redlands First United Methodist Church’s ministry in the community are encouraged. Individuals are invited to the church’s evening dinner program “ What’s Cooking” at 6 p.m. where they have the opportunity to enjoy food and fellowship before the concert. The cost for dinner is $5.
