Congressman Jerry Lewis Presents The Village at Redlands With A United States Flag, Flown Over The U.S. Capital

3/9/2009 - Congressman Jerry Lewis Presents The Village at Redlands With A United States Flag, Flown Over The U.S. Capital

Redlands, CA February 18, 2009 — Congressman Jerry Lewis presented The Village at Redlands, Redlands newest retirement community, with a flag which was flown over the United States Capital.  Congressman Lewis graciously gave the flag to Rosemary Parker, a resident of The Village at Redlands.  Ms. Parker, who initially had the idea to fly a United States flag over the 20 acre retirement community, stated that she was “so proud to see the flag flying as a reminder of the gift it is to live in the United States of America”.

On Wednesday, February 18, The Village at Redlands officially raised the flag with a “flag raising ceremony”.  According to Troy Vugteveen, Executive Director, the flag raising ceremony reflected the “giving spirit” of our community. The 30 foot flag pole was constructed and donated by George Jorritsma, a life-long resident of the area.  Participants in the ceremony included World War II veterans Bill VanderLugt, Izzy Ash and Mel Borrell, all residents of The Village.

Along with these three military veterans was Specialist 4th Class - Chase Ash, the grandson of Izzy Ash.  Chase Ash is currently serving our country in the U.S. Army and recently returned from a tour of duty in Iraq where he received the Silver Star for bravery over and beyond the call of duty.

Harriet Bierling, the Activity Director of The Village, reflected on the ceremony and stated, “Tears filled the eyes of Izzy Ash as he watched his grandson, Chase Ash, raise the flag for the first time over The Village at Redlands.”  Bill VanderLugt, dressed in his original World War II uniform, spoke words that reflected his love for this country.  The ceremony ended with resident Mel Borrell leading the residents and distinguished guests in the singing of “My Country Tis of Thee”.
