November 09, 2009, Redlands, CA—The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators  announces  a “Shmooze” at Barnes and Noble on Saturday, November 14 from 10-12 a.m. Shmoozes are open to anyone interested in writing or illustrating children’s books. This month’s speaker will be Q. L. Pearce (http://www.qlpearce.com/), author of more than 140 books for children who will speak on the topic, “Work-for-Hire.”

Pearce (known as “Q”) has written more than 140 books for children, including 8 collections of scary stories for middle grade and 3 film tie-in books for the Fox animated film Titan AE and the Universal animated series Land Before Time. She has published more than 30 classroom workbooks and teacher manuals on the topics of reading, science, math, and values. Of note, the Scary Stories for Sleep-Overs series has total sales of more than one million copies.

When recently asked to describe her upcoming presentation at Barnes and Noble she replied, “I will be touching on three main areas regarding work-for-hire. The first will be how to create a submission packet for publishers. I'll include a list of some of the better known work-for-hire companies. The second will include tips on what to do once you get a trial assignment. The third is how to manage research and the incredibly tight deadlines of WFH.

Don't miss this opportunity to learn all this valuable information from an expert. Two volumes of her Plays That Show Character Counts, are currently offered as a part of the national Character Counts! program. Q is an Assistant Regional Advisor for the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and currently a member of the SCBWI Advisory Board.

The group will meet at the Starbucks inside Barnes and Noble. Everyone is welcome to attend, but seating is limited. Due to the popularity of these events, and the notoriety of Q, please email Marilyn Donahue, coordinator of this event, at Sanayeh@aol.com so that adequate seating can be ensured. Participants are invited to arrive early and get acquainted.
