When Elephants Weep: the Emotional Lives of Animals

3/25/2010 - When Elephants Weep: the Emotional Lives of Animals

Redlands, CA - On Wednesday, April 14, the Reading Discoveries book discussion group will meet at the San Bernardino County Museum to talk about “When Elephants Weep: the Emotional Lives of Animals,” by Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson and Susan McCarthy. This 7:30pm discussion is free to the public.

You may already sense the joy your dog feels when getting ready to go for a walk, or the serenity and peacefulness your cat expresses when being petted. But can science prove that animals have emotions?

“This book presents its case—that animals do indeed feel and express emotion—through scores of anecdotes and personal stories,” said Jolene Redvale, curator of education and facilitator of the group. “The subject of animal emotions has enjoyed a rich following in recent years, since people have committed to observing, recording, and communicating about the subject. Is it a question of emotions or scientific method? Read the book, come to the discussion and offer your perspective.”

The Reading Discoveries book discussion group meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30pm, and is open to the public free of charge. For more information, contact Jolene Redvale at (909) 307-2669 ext. 252 or e-mail jredvale@sbcm.sbcounty.gov.

The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. Parking is free. For more information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org. The museum is accessible to persons with disabilities.
