Making Baskets at the Museum

4/15/2010 - Making Baskets at the Museum

The education division of the San Bernardino County Museum will hold a basket-making family workshop on Saturday, May 8. This workshop will be offered twice: 9am to noon, and repeated at 1:30 to 4:30pm. The registration deadline is Saturday, May 1. This workshop is supported in part by the James Irvine Foundation.

In this workshop, participants will learn about the natural materials used to make baskets, weave a traditional-style doll with palm leaves, and construct round reed baskets. The cost of $30 for a family or $15 for an individual includes all materials and admission to the museum. Workshop projects are appropriate for families with children ages 8 and up.

Workshop times are 9am to noon, or 1:30 to 4:30pm. Because space is limited, registration is required by Saturday, May 1. For more information or registration forms, call (909) 307-2669 ext, 256 or visit www.sbcountymuseum.org

While at the museum, participants can also see special exhibit, “Generation of Symbols: The Morongo band of Mission Indians Basket Collection.” More than 100 baskets will be on display, all from the collection of the Morongo Band of Mission Indians. The baskets reflect several southern California basketry traditions, including Cahuilla, Cupeño, Serrano, Luiseño, and Diegueño.

The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays and holiday Mondays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $8 (adult), $6 (military or senior), $5 (student) and $4 (child aged 5 to 12). Children under five and Museum Association members are admitted free. For more information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org.

The museum is accessible to persons with disabilities. If assistive listening devices or other auxiliary aids are needed in order to participate in museum exhibits or programs, requests should be made through Museum Visitor Services at least three business days prior to your visit. Visitor Services’ telephone number is 909-307-2669 ext. 229 or (TDD) 909-792-1462.
